Viet Nam Customs’ position affirmed by successful hosting of the 2023 WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition

The new position of Viet Nam Customs

The 2023 WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition is the WCO’s biggest annual conference and is hosted by Viet Nam Customs for the first time. The event took place from 10-12 October. The Customs administrations and local and international delegates have highly appreciated and were deeply impressed great efforts of Viet Nam in hosting the event.

The Director General Nguyen Van Can said that the organization of the event has been consistent with the goals that Viet Nam Customs reported to the Government and the Ministry of Finance. Accordingly, the successful organization of the event has brought great efficiency and affirmed the position of Viet Nam Customs in the WCO members and in the region. Through achievements from the event, Viet Nam Customs gives a message about the goal of reform, technology application, and placing people at the heart of innovation.

The success of the event has affirmed the new position of Viet Nam as a strongly integrating and developing country and confirmed that Viet Nam Customs always fulfills its responsibility as the leading agency in customs reform and modernization and cross-border trade facilitation.

The organization of the conference has enhanced the position of the country and Viet Nam Customs. The achievement of the event has helped ministries, sectors, central and local government agencies, and the business community understand the role, responsibility, and great effort of Viet Nam Customs in international cooperation to attract foreign investment. In addition, Viet Nam Customs has actively promoted the cultural identity as well as the image of a beautiful and peaceful nation, tourism, and the people of Vietnam to international friends.

The positive feedback given by international and local delegates, customs units, and especially young Customs officials at the event has shown the great efforts of Viet Nam Customs. Director General of Viet Nam Customs Nguyen Van Can also said that through the conference, the young Customs officials will get major benefits such as improving their knowledge about the Customs sector and customs performance, thereby understanding their responsibility and being more confident to accomplish tasks.

According to Director General Nguyen Van Can, the successful hosting of the event has helped Viet Nam Customs improve and gain more experience in organizing international events. Especially, the most important meaning of the conference is to widen the valuable experience for Customs officials. This also is a good opportunity for Customs officials to approach the application of the latest scientific and technical development trends in the world for Customs operations such as scanners, surveillance and inspection equipment, AI, Big Data…

“This is also the basis and important premise for Viet Nam Customs to successfully build a Digital Customs and Smart Customs model in line with the goals in the Customs Development Strategy by 2030. The knowledge and valuable experiences shared in the conference will make an important contribution to Vietnam Customs achieving the targets in the strategy” Director General Nguyen Van Can expected.

Applauding major efforts

The flagship event has achieved great success. During the entire process of preparing for the conference, Viet Nam Customs and relevant units have developed plans and coordinated effectively with the WCO. The WCO and international delegates have highly appreciated the hosting by Viet Nam Customs.

On behalf of Vietnam Customs, Director General Nguyen Van Can thanked the WCO and Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya for their trust in choosing Vietnam as the host of the event. He also expressed his attitude to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang, leaders of the Ministry of Finance, leaders of ministries, departments, and sectors, and Hanoi People's Committee for direction and cooperation with Viet Nam Customs; thanked Customs administrations, international organizations, academia, private sector, and experts for attending and contributing to the success of the conference.

Vietnam Customs has highly appreciated and thanked the local and international press agencies and reporters for attending and disseminating the event. Especially, the Director General is very proud of departments and officials of the General Department Office, International Department, Customs Magazine, and relevant units for their contribution to the success of the conference.

The 2023 WCO Technology Conference and Exhibition has achieved high results in line with its purposes and requirements. The success of the conference has shown the pride of the country and Viet Nam Customs with world friends. The Director General has also applauded the efforts of units, officers, and working teams in the Steering Board in this event and hoped that units and officials will promote their experience to hold international and regional conferences in the near future.
