Enhancing inter-agency coordination in combating transinational drug crimes

From 19–22 May 2026, in Da Nang City, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (within the framework of the Passenger and Cargo Control Programme – PCCP/UNODC and the Border Management Programme – BM/UNODC), the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), and the Customs Department jointly organized a training program entitled “Enhancing Inter-Agency Coordination in Controlling the Illegal Trade and Transportation of Narcotics and Precursors.” The program was funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), U.S. Embassy in Viet Nam.

The program comprises of representatives of the Regional Coordinators for Southeast Asia and the Pacific of the PCCP/UNODC Programme and the BM/UNODC Programme; experts from the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Belgian Customs Administration, together with representatives from the coordinating units of the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, the Customs Department, and 22 delegates who are officers of the two forces currently working in drug prevention and control at international land border gates, seaports, and international airports nationwide. On behalf of the Customs Department, Mr. Vuong Tuan Nam – Deputy Director of the Customs Control and Supervision Sub-Department – participated as a trainer, sharing experience and professional expertise in the customs field. Representatives of the sponsoring side includes the Director of INL and the Deputy Attaché of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The training course is organized in the context of increasingly complicated developments in transnational drug crimes, with increasingly sophisticated methods and tactics exploiting international transport routes, import-export activities, e-commerce, and express delivery services to illegally transport narcotics across borders.
Through the program, participants were updated on new trends in drug-related crimes; enhanced their skills in risk identification, intelligence sharing, coordination in investigations, and handling cases related to narcotics and precursors.

This continues to be a practical activity contributing to the effective implementation of the National Target Program on Drug Prevention and Control through 2030, while affirming the effectiveness of cooperation between Viet Nam Customs, UNODC, U.S. INL, and relevant law enforcement agencies in combating transnational crimes, ensuring national security, safety, and legitimate trade.
