To strengthen the capacity to detect and prevent smuggling, trade fraud, and the illicit cross-border movement of goods through X-ray image analysis, a delegation from Viet Nam Customs participated in an International X-ray Interdiction Training course on X-ray image analysis and interdiction techniques in Laredo, Texas, United States, from June 1–5, 2026.
The training was jointly organized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Export Control and Border Security (EXBS) Program. It represents another practical cooperation activity between Vietnam Customs and the United States in strengthening customs enforcement capacity, while further enhancing bilateral cooperation and professional exchanges between the two customs administrations.
Throughout the program, participants received comprehensive instruction on the operating principles of modern non-intrusive inspection (NII) systems, advanced X-ray image interpretation techniques, and methods for identifying anomalies and concealment methods used to smuggle narcotics, weapons, undeclared currency, and other prohibited or restricted goods hidden within cargo containers, vehicles, and passenger baggage.
In addition to classroom instruction, the course placed strong emphasis on practical exercises and scenario-based learning. Participants had the opportunity to work directly with X-ray inspection systems currently deployed at the Port of Laredo and exchange experiences with CBP experts on image analysis procedures, risk assessment, targeting methodologies, and operational decision-making in customs inspection and enforcement.
The knowledge and practical experience gained through this training will contribute to enhancing Viet Nam Customs’ capacity to effectively utilize non-intrusive inspection technologies, strengthen the detection and prevention of customs violations, and support ongoing customs modernization efforts aimed at facilitating legitimate trade while ensuring the security and integrity of the international supply chain.
